Go to a salon and they will help you!

I would def. go to a hair salon. I've had really bad experiances with bleaches and if you want just the top layer dyed it shouldn't be too high. I go to Trendsetters, it's a cosmotology school, they're super cheap.

Well my best friend dyed her hair purple the other day and she's a brunette as well. She did it herself, well I helped, but it was cheaper and looked just as good. We used the Loreal stuff that comes in an orange box from any drug store but its not permanent. So as long as you have someone who knows what they are doing to help you then you can save money and do it yourself. If you bleach it first the purple will stand out more.

If u do it urself use the Manic Panic bleaching kit and Special Effects or Raw dye. You should find this all at Hot Topic. A good thing too is the cronies at HT always give great advice about what to do or how to dye your hair! So that should help. Anyways, I always had pretty great success coloring my hair alone (or with a friend). No need to put down hundreds on a simple $15 job. Unless you don't feel confident to do it.

Now why do I get the feelin you are a Minnesotan? Interesting idea, purple top layer and natural bleach on the bottom, wow that is going to be hot if you take reaaallly good care! What I would do though is carefully separate the layers u want to dye seperately. Bleach/dye the top first and wait till completely dry and all the "Excess" color has washed out. But before you dye this top layer try to coat your hair with something, i would ask about what to use to protect your lower layer while u dye the top. I'd just tactfully use a towel or saran wrap in a way to where u can clip your hair in the back below as well while u paint on the color. You got to be careful how ever because some of the color dyes are runny. This goes especially for Manic Panic. Stay away from that stuff!

So, when tha top is done and all dry keep it pinned up while you bleach the bottom. Remember heat processes bleach and color much better so if u need, strap ur hair in as it saturates with plastic wrap.

IYou rinse out after the suggested time (oh and they say always do a strand test so you can tell what sort of hue you are looking for!) and as your top layer should be all clean and free of loose dye, do NOT shampoo but go ahead and rinse together then deep condition.

Use quality oil treatments to replenish lost moisture.

You will only need to bleach once if you watch your strand test. That, and, if the color you come out with isn't light enough or it's too brassy for your liking you can use either toner or color corrector (both but especially the latter can lay on the amount of damage ur doing to your hair) to change the look of it.

I would also apply the darker hue on the bottom layer rather than the top. Purple, can turn out to be abrasive on the hair. If you want a different color on bottom, maybe use a lighter tone on top then darker below it!

Have fun ~ just remember, hair color can be way addicting. oXxO
