Sometimes bad hair can be caused by the very thing that we think can't help. Sahmpoo it right? Make it squeky clean. Using certain products builds up a wax type coating on hair making it look dirty and feel that way. The shampoo makes it feel clean immediately but its not. See following site. I have experienced this myself too. You keep washing and washing it only to have more build up. Changing shampoos can help but more importantly buying a cheap product at the drug store that will stip the wax build up off.

Allow your hair to dry naturally, with just a bit of leave-in conditioner. Then iron your hair, and when finished do a little finishing spray,or mabye a dime of shine serum-on the ends. I used to have the same problem;drying my hair every day, with loads of product in it,after a while it started to look as you say "lanky".Hair looked and smelled greasy-the hair product would burn off while drying sections, and the greasy/burnt smell would stay in my hair. And it took away the hair shine. So i started to let it dry naturally, then style it with a small amount of product. Hope this helps!
